Scarlet Traces: The Great Game by Ian Edginton, D'Israeli.
The sequel to Scarlet Traces a unofficial 'sequel' to War of the Worlds. This wasn't bad - its the British counter-invasion of Mars and the results (which are interesting - possibly at least as interesting as the story).
In this story, Britain groans under increasing strains of repressive measures - censorship, D-notices, detentions, state sanctioned beatings and murders - as well as a 40 year long war on Mars. It opens with the crash of a British space transport in a lake and subsequent massacre of all aboard. The story revolves primarily around Charlotte Hemings, reporter and photographer, and Robert Autumn from Scarlet Traces reappears and offers a major info dump on the situation as well as moving the story along.
By the end, 2 worlds are completely changed- and in ways no one expected. And while its not bad and I do like it, I'll admit the pacing was off. It could have used at least 12 to 20 more pages to draw it out and make the big reveals worthwhile.
Especially recommended for those that enjoyed Scarlet Traces, The Ministry of Space and alternate histories.
