The School of Night: Completely different from what I was anticipating after reading a couple of Bayard's previous books, but nonetheless entertaining. Normally, when I read anything that resembles mystery or thriller, I want it to just grab me! This book sneaks up on you as it initially starts out slowly but the suspense continues to build drawing you into the author's style.

He weaves together two different time periods: contemporary and then early 17th century but he does so in a way that flows well. I won't go into the plot as it is too likely to contain spoilers. There is mystery, history, romance but none of it "overdone" - just enough to keep you picking up the book to see what happens next.

Of the books I've read by this author, I think this one is almost as good as the Black Tower, and much better than Mister Timothy. Present day characters involved in old documents related to alleged School of Night, a small group of curious scientific-minded individuals that may have included Walter Raleigh, Christopher Marlowe, etc. Well paced action, as in Black Tower.
