For Vera, all of the day's madness began when she saw the knife handle poking out of her mother's neck.
Hmmm...an interesting beginning to this book. Vera's mom, Beatrice, comes home from the grocery store with a knife in her neck that she doesn't realize is there. The same morning, the town of Cumberland Creek, Virginia learns that Maggie Rae Dasher committed suicide the night before. Or did she? The ladies of the scrapbooking club become sleuths as they try to find out what really happened. The ladies start sifting for clues when Maggie Rae's scrapbooks and pictures are left on the curb.
This was an odd little book. The murder victim is revealed to be a writer of erotica and into S and M. She has been having affairs with various men in town. Annie Chamovitz is a former investigative reporter now living in town with her husband and two small boys. Annie becomes instrumental in uncovering clues when she begins interviewing Maggie Rae's family and friends. Strange tidbits of information come from a number of sources. Sometimes it is a little difficult to keep up with who knows who and how they relate to the victim. In addition to the scrapbooking tips, there are a couple of ghosts and a Mennonite order. A little odd.

It's not quite a "cozy", more like a cozy with an edge. Lots of surprise topics pop up throughout the book too, topics you would never predict just from reading the back cover. There were a few parts I zoomed right over because they really weren't pertinent to the plot, but overall I was anxious to find out what was going on and who the culprit was. I do plan to get the next one in this series.

When Maggie Rae Dasher was found dead, not one of the "Scrapbooking Queens" really knew much about her. But they did know, that they did not think she committed suicide, as believed to be the case. She was in fact murdered and there is no lack of suspects, as it is soon discovered that Maggie Rae had may hidden secrets. Beatrice, 80 year old mother of one of scrapbookers (Vera) had been, unbeknownst to her, stabbed in the neck the very morning of Maggie Rae's death. Was there a connection? Beatrice, a retired physicist , is a bit of a psychic and visits with her dead husband on occasion. She is also the target of some strange happenings. Annie Chaimovitz, the newest of the group , resurrects her reporting and investigative skills and discovers many of Maggie Rae's secrets. This first in the series book held my interest and if you are into scrapbooking, you will love this mystery...I have already requested the next book........
This book is a good start for a new mystery series. There's murder and scrapbooking in a small Southern town. What's not to like?
