I recommend it as good background, and an easy enough read. I read an older edition in 2003. Worthwhile, to be sure, but not necessarily the "last word" on the subject(s). It's difficult, if not impossible, to sort out fragmentary and contradictory "evidence," legends, etc. McBirnie sounds quite sure and authoritative throughout; well... but it remains on my shelf anyway, and every now and then "I wonder what McBirnie says..."
