Like many other Carla Kelly fans, I collect her books. Let me warn you that both of these novellas were previously published. Check below to see where these short stories first appeared; you may already have them in your 'book stash.'

LET NOTHING YOU DISMAY
This story is a bit contrived but Ms. Kelly offers a unique twist. Egypt-born teacher Cecelia Ambrose has exotic looks and is accompanying one of her students (Lucinda) home. Although she is expecting to turn around and return to the now-empty school, Lucinda's Uncle Trevor begs her to stay. Lucinda's parents have been called away to an emergency and Uncle Trevor is in charge of the children; something he says he doesn't feel comfortable doing on his own.

Trevor, a loving and intelligent barrister, has a secret that brings him to a low point each Christmas. Cecelia eventually learns his secret and helps him accept what he cannot change. She also helps Trevor look at the wonderful work he does as a child's advocate with new eyes. This is a simple (but powerful) story; I expect to reread it many times.

NO ROOM AT THE INN
This is a sweet tale; it allows a Regency-era Mary and Joe experience a Christmas neither will forget. When a horrific snowstorm stops the progress of a carriage in which Mary (and others) are travelling, they find there is no room for them in the only inn in that locale. Thus, the group must spend a few days in Joe's ramshackle house.

Mary and Joseph grew up together and remember how much they enjoyed each other's company. When an older couple arrive (they are looking for their lost son), they all find a way to have a wonderful Christmas.

LET NOTHING YOU DISMAY was in another Christmas anthology:
Regency Christmas Wishes (2003).

The 2002 issue of The Regency Christmas IX included the second story: NO ROOM AT THE INN
