A writer becomes an educator. I thought it would be interesting because I had a "career" before I became a teacher. I went through a different certification process just like the author. I could tell you stories about that process. But after a year, she was certified and ready to teach kindergarten. What? It took me almost two years of tests, methods courses, and student teaching to get my Master's degree. The story was sometimes funny and I could relate to some of her problems since I taught kindergarten for two years. But those funny moments were few and far in-between. Sometimes this book was really tedious with all of the mindless details. Because of all the unnecessary crap, I lost interest in this book within 100 pages but read the last few chapters. Since the author set-up the potential romance, the ending was not surprising. If a writer can become an educator, does that mean I can become a writer?

I picked this book up for $4 at a warehouse bookstore. Now I know why they were selling tons of them for so cheap. The story was bland and boring. There was really nothing to keep me turning the pages. No action. No surprises. No drama. Nothing. It was very monotone. The dialogue throughout the book was superficial and awkward with no real substance to it. I kept thinking that people don't talk or act like they did in the book. It was all just very odd.

I was hoping that there would be more to the book. The lady is a teacher and we all know what first grade classrooms can be like. I'm talking funny conversations (as in kids say the darndest things) and teacher camaraderie. Instead I found it very annoying and quite silly, especially when it came to how Miss Dearborn dressed. A cowboy pajama top? A Hawaiian shirt and red high tops? Come on now. What teacher dresses like that?

And we are all supposed to believe that Janet Greenhill just emerged out of nowhere and helped her write this amazing best seller? And that, after Charlotte wrote it, she automatically became like this character she made up? That dressing like a school marm helps to control her classroom? And now that she dresses like she belongs in the 1930's the man she likes all of a sudden falls in love with her? Just like that? It all had a schizo/Alfred Hitchcock/Psycho feel to it and I kept thinking "This lady needs to get herself to a therapist ASAP!" (I won't even mention the unrealistic, absurd ending.)

I only finished reading this book because I kept hoping and praying it would get better. It didn't. It was just a bunch of nonsense written on paper and the only way it got published is because Sara Lewis went through a vanity publisher.
