Second Sight (Arcane Society, Bk 1) (Large Print)
Second Sight - Arcane Society, Bk 1 - Large Print Author:Amanda Quick Financially straitened and on the path to spinsterhood, Venetia Milton thought her stay at the remote, ramshackle Arcane House would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engineer her own ravishment. She was there to photograph the artifacts collected by a highly secretive organization, founded two centuries earlier by an alchemist. And the alc... more »hemist's descendant -- her employer, Gabriel Jones -- has the eyes of a sorcerer.
But despite Venetia's intent to seduce Mr. Jones and move on, she is shattered upon her return home to read in the press of his violent demise. Using the sizable fee Mr. Jones paid her, Venetia establishes a new life, opening a gallery in London. Of course, posing as a respectable widow makes it easier to do business, so -- in a private tribute to her lost, only lover -- she assumes the identity of "Mrs. Jones."
Her romantic whim, however, will cause unexpected trouble. For one thing, Mr. Jones is about to stride, living and breathing, back into Venetia's life. And the two share more than a passionate memory -- indeed, they are bonded by a highly unusual sort of vision, one that goes far beyond Venetia's abilities as a photographer. They also share a terrible threat -- for someone has stolen a centuries-old notebook from Arcane House that contains a formula believed to enhance psychic powers of the kind Gabriel and Venetia possess. And the thief wants to know more -- even if he must kill the keeper of the Arcane Society's treasures, or the photographer who catalogued them, to obtain such knowledge.« less
This book was a great deal of fun to read. Venetia is a professional photographer; Gabriel is a member of the Arcane Society. They both have psychic abilities, although they don't let each other know that until well into the book. The Society hires Venetia to photograph their artifacts, and she and Gabriel have a short-lived affair. Afterwards, she reads in the newspaper that he died, and she, thinking he is dead, takes his last name and pretends to be a widow for professional reasons. Then he shows up...
These are wonderful characters, vivid and well-drawn with a sense of humor. An excellent read!
The plot flow was all off. The story had no build-up of character development, just plopped you down in the middle of what felt like walking into a joke where you only catch the punch line. Then the author seems to try and write a secondary story after what should have been the main story, but was succinctly said in 2 paragraphs. No real character development after that first chapter really, nothing to gain my like for the characters. The love scenes stunk, and the main man was lame and had no depth; conversationally or otherwise. It just felt unfinished, disjointed, and boring. On a good note, there was little if any grammatical errors, so at least the editor did their job. Very poor book indeed. I love Amanda Quick, and was expecting something a lot different then this book delivered. It felt like someone else was writing under her name. ~Kirst
I really enjoyed this book. It was suspenseful, sexy, and it was an easy read. Even though the story takes place in the 1700's the women are strong characters. Both families have lots of secrets in their past that make for page turning fun.
There was not a lot of romance but what is there is wonderfully written. The scenes are romantic and very private, almost like a throw back to when people were more modest.
I can not wait to read the next book in the series.
First book I read by Amanda Quick, I'm adding her books to my favorite list. A refreshing combination of historial, romance and paranormal. Several times I found myself laughing.... Looking forward to reading more of Amanda Quick books...
