I've noticed, recently, that when I sort someone's bookshelf, I'm not seeing all of the books I want to. Many books don't have tags. I was just searching a 4/1 deal on children's books, sorted by children's, then went back to the entire shelf to see if there was anything else I wanted, and there were probably 10 children's books I had missed!

I've gone to my shelf and added tags so this won't happen to my shelf, but what about everyone else? How do we get the message out?

Perhaps you are also doing an author sort?  I know that this causes problems in searches, as the books without listed authors are often then left out of the search...

When you sort by childrens, you are sorting by genre. Do you mean that you are going back into the Book Edit Page, and adding the genre to the database? Because this would be a good thing to do.

I haven't used tags much, so I can't comment on that part of this post.

But I do go and add or fix genres all the time.

I just tripped over the tags the other day, so that's what I've been using. Now I'll check out the book edit page. Thanks!

Well tags have to be manually added to each book. So if you go to someones shelf and search tags then you only get whatever books someone has taken the time to tag.  I would use the Genre sort button that's on everyone's bookshelf.  Not everyone uses tags and so for many shelves any tags on their books are just because someone somewhere at sometime tagged that ISBN.

I keep coming across books that don't have any genre listed, so they don't show up when I sort. I only see them when I check the person's entire shelf.  I'm wondering how many great books I've missed.

Question: How do I get to the book edit page?

To get to the book edit page, from the book's page, click on "More Options" and choose "Edit Book Data".

There's lots of info on editing data and images in this thread: http://www.paperbackswap.com/forum/topic.php?t=60867

If you're searching by tags only, I would think a vast majority of books wouldn't come up. Most people don't use them, and a lot of people have them blocked (like me) so would never see them at all, because some of the personal tags are long and annoying.

I went to the Edit Book place. This makes alot more sense. Will it be pesky for me to add genres? I see someone has to approve them (individually).

They do have to be approved, but if it's correct and they aren't too backed-up, it will only take a couple of days.  when I edit book data I tag the book temporarily so I can go back to see. When it's been approved and all is correct - then I remove the tag.

The genre settings are how books are selected by both the opening page banners and the search features.  So it is really helpful to add them.
