Blech. The "hero" of this book never really redeems himself. He's a selfish ass through the whole story. I think if the book's timeframe had been 1374 or even 1674, instead of 1874, his attitude that women are all property, baggage, chattel, and "whores" would be easier to swallow. I don't read books from medieval times anymore because I don't want to read about women who are treated as something less than a person.
I guess this type of story appeals to a lot of women, men who are really bad, horrible people with few redeeming qualities. The guy who drinks and whores and takes the heroine by semi-force (she just can't say no to him, even in the face of him coming directly from another woman's bed.) The "hero" has sex with other women from start to finish of this book, even after they are married he won't agree to stop whoring. He promises to "try". How sweet. Isn't that sexy?
The heroine was a simpering idiot whose plight was wholly unsympathetic since she had many other options and chose not to exercise them. Golly too bad, you might have to get a job. But rather she'd let this man call her names and lock her up than work for a living.
On top of my story complaints, the writing was soooooo boring. The author doesn't let the characters and actions show the story and let it unravel naturally, she tells and tells and tells with endless backstory in agonizing detail. Major revelations happen behind the scenes putting it so far on the back burner that you wonder why she included it at all.
ick.

A reckless and handsome prince risks his title and his heart to win the hand of an innocent enchantress. From the bestselling author of Outlaw comes a dark saga of erotic historical romance, sweeping from fabulous country estates and hunting lodges to the opulent ballrooms and salons of Russian nobility.
He seduced her on a dare. Then he became obsessed with her and treated her like an object. Hot.
