"One Soldier's Story," by Bob Dole
Before he served in the US Senate for nearly 30 years, Bob Dole fought for his country in one of the bloodiest campaigns of World War II. He'd been a college athlete who dreamed of becoming a doctor. Instead, crushed by the hell of war, the muscular six-footer would face still more battles back home just to learn to walk again--and walk with pride. An inspiring personal glimpse into the Greatest Generation. "Compelling...A great and important story."--Boston Globe
This book also includes "The Undomestic Goddess" by Sophie Kinsella and "The Double Eagle" by James Twining.« less
I have read "True Believer" by Nicholas Sparks and "One Soldier's Story," by Bob Dole. The Sparks one wasn't my favorite, but that's because I'm a guy. The Bob Dole story was amazing. It made me much more aware of the sacrifices made by his generation of soldiers, as well as those who came before and after him, so that I can live in freedom in this great nation. Mr. Dole's story should be required reading in high schools, in my not-so-humble opinion. But if you're already past high school age, there's still great lessons to be learned from his experience.
