I got a book I didn't ask for.  What steps do I take to correct this.  Do I contact PBS or the sender (mailer) first?  Please help!

Contact the sender and tell them what happened.

That is easy enough!  No form to fill out?  No reports to write?..........  if only everything else in life was this simple!

Hi Anna,

Check the PBS Help Center for "I received a book I didn't request," and you'll find the info you need.

Did you mark the book Received With a Problem?  Wrong Book is an option.  When I got two books mixed up that's the way they each handled it.  They forwarded the books to each other and I refunded credits, then they marked each swap as resolved in the Transaction Archive.  It actually went pretty smoothly and both Swappers were very understanding.

edit: In defense of my suggestion I found this in the Help Center under "What if I mail the wrong book?":

If you put the wrong book into the correct wrapper:

  • You can simply offer to send the correct book, or
  • Refund the credit the requestor will give you when she or he marks the book "wrong book received"
  • When a book is marked "received, with a problem" (and in this case the receiver would choose "wrong book" from among the options), the sender does get credit for sending the book, even though it was the wrong one.

it is one of the ways of handling receiving the wrong book.

Don't mark it received!  Not even Received with a Problem!  You haven't received the book you requested.

Here's the usual scenario:  Your book is in the hands of the person who requested the book YOU have.  The sender will likely offer each of you a credit to mail the books to each other - if you both agree, mail the books, THEN you each can mark the book received when you've received your book!

This  happens a lot, and if everyone works together, it's resolved very easily :)

Hi Anna--

What Rhonda and Marsha said is correct.  If you check the Help Center under "I received a book I didn't request!" there's a detailed page on what to do, along with other things that may have happened (such as if you're participating in one of the PBS games, etc).

Cheers,

Catt

Hi everyone!  Thanks for all the great advice.  I'm happy to report that the sender PM-ed me before I had a chance to do anything.  She will paypal me the cost of postage and I will mail the book to the "right" receiver and they will mai my request ed book to me.  A happy ending!  What a great bunch of swappers we are!

Wishing you all the best!  Anna S.

A happy ending!  So many times while I have been sending out multiple books on one day I have stressed about making a mix-up.  Everyone makes mistakes sometimes and it's so nice when everyone involved is understanding!
