Very interesting book. Grips you but leaves you wishing the moralizing had been toned down a bit

I loved "Ender's Game", and I thought I would try another book by Orson Scott Card. "Seventh Son," which is the first in a series, is good, but not as good as "Ender's Game." Card creates an alternate frontier history for America, where folk magic is part of everyday life. The main character is the seventh son of a seventh son, which automatically gives him special magical powers. It is interesting to watch magic intertwined with the frontier we all think of as down-to-earth and conventionally religious.

Generally a good series by Orson Scott Card. Enough of the writing that makes him unique to pull you through the series. Start with "Ender's Game" if you have never read Orson Scott Card.

The first book in the Alvin Maker series. A young child of extreme potential is born. But who will claim him, the forces of evil or good? And which does his father really belong to? Great read.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. Its a nice short novel, but extremely entertaining. A very interesting concept, handled by an extremely talented writer. Card is awesome with character development. You feel for and with each character. Seriously, you should be reading this right now!

When this series was first published starting in 1987, I picked it up immediately. Orson Scott Card is one of my favorite authors. I read the first 3 books in the series, but then sort of lost track somehow. By the time I realized all the books had been written I couldn't justify buying them all. (Long story, don't ask.) But I always kept this series on my mind's bookshelf, wanting to have it in reality. When I found it here, on Paperback Swap, I was really excited, so I got the whole series. Then I was afraid maybe they wouldn't be as good somehow, maybe I had changed and I'd be disappointed. I just finished this book, Seventh Son. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!! This series is still absolutely fantastic! Thank you, Orson!!

Excellent setting, wonderful concept. Some predictability, but still a great read.
