There's a lot of things going on despite much of the story taking place on Sully's spacecruiser, the Boru Karn. The book isn't short - 410 pages because of all the things going on. And besides all the intruige and incidents that happen in space because of their enemies and because they are wanted people, Sully and Chaz are also dealing with Sully's gifts as a Ragkiril. Sully has so much power, a power he feels is growing and which could corrupt him. Actually, it made the love story more complicated and interesting because of what Sully is going through. Now he and Chaz are ky'sara and ky'sal, they have to learn about it as they go along. Pushing matters further along, they meet Del, an exiled Stoloroth prince who wants to teach Sully, but who makes Chaz uncomfortable.

Anyway, overall, I think this is a darker toned book that Sinclair's previous ones. I prefer the lighter stories, but this was more realistic because of the dark parts. There are a couple of shockers in here regarding some decisions Chaz makes in order to do the right thing. No spoilers, but things got really interesting in the last 30 or so pages.

It also felt like there were two distinct parts of the book that both focus on problems that are related to Sully's gift, like there were two big plots revolving around certain enemies, and because of them Sully is forced to deal with his Ragkiril nature. The only problem I had was that this book was pretty long, and there were lulls in the action. It that had to happen, but those parts felt slow to me. From the other reviews I see, I'm the only one who noticed though.

The sequel to Gabriel's Ghost is intense. Very intense. Sinclair does her usual outstanding job producing fascinating characters, a gripping plot and richly thought out settings. She did a world class [should that be universe class?:] job but as the title suggests it is a very dark story. Since I like my stories to end with some variation of 'and they lived happily ever after or until the next adventure' I was not satisfied with the ending. Which explains why this is marked as a 4 instead 5 - 5 star writing though!

Futuristic/ Sci-Fi romance by Linnea Sinclair. This is the continuation of the story of Chaz and Sully, sequel to Gabriel's Ghost. Chaz and Sully have their hands full, exploring their bond, trying to find the lab where someone is breeding Jukors, and staying ahead of the Imperial Fleet. Help comes from an unexpected source: a Ragkiril Kyi, who offers to tutor Sully. But, there's a price. This book is jam-packed with love, romance, suspense, adventure and intrigue. Even though there were times I thought Chaz would have been justified in kicking Sully to the curb, or out of an air-lock. Good book. Can't wait to begin the next, Hope's Folly. Worth a credit.

One Wild Rideor shall I say one wild slippery space???

This is book 2 (of currently 4) and I felt at the start that I had taken too much of a break between reading Gabriels Ghost and Shades of Dark. I had forgotten what many of the made up terms were and some of the characters, only briefly referred to in Gabriels Ghost were key players (behind the scenes) in this book. That being said, I loath books that hit you over the head fifty billion times with what happened previously. And after reading a bit I caught back onhowever I think this may have contributed to the book not grabbing me right away.

The love story is dark, and I am not use to reading dark love storiesbut it is exactly what needed to happen and I cant wait to see what is next for Chaz and Sully. The main reason this story line is dark is due to what Sully is, a Kyi, which he does not fully understand. This causes him to make a few mistakes with Chaz and other characters while he is trying to find himself.

The character development continues to grow from the first book and I find that I like other characters more and more. As for the last 50 pages, I could not put the book down! Talk about an exciting ending.

I really enjoyed this book. Linnea Sinclair's novels are wonderful, imaginative, and they give me a new outlook on Science Fiction.

This is book 2 of the "Chaz" Bergren and Gabriel Ross Sullivan love story. It is full of action and romance.
