Another book I waited far too long to read, Shane is a beautifully written marvel of character development and engaging story. The people are archetypes, to be sure, but they are also real, and their story was impossible to put down once I started. The depth of feeling, of loyalty, love, and honor packed into so few pages is amazing. Even if westerns aren't your thing, try this book.

This is an excellent western book that everyone from 12 to 112 can enjoy. It's set in early 20th century Wyoming and tells the story of a stranger named Shane who passes through a small town. He is seeking peace and redemption from his past and his sense of honor, dignity and justice are conveyed through out the novel. Of course, trouble follows and the quick paced action and exciting read will keep you on your toes. This was a "can't put down" novel for this reviewer, whose prefered genre is usually science fiction. Because it's a short novel it would be great on a summer reading list for teens or to take to the beach. It's highly recommended.
