I'm thinking about only shipping out once a week instead of running to the PO everyday with 1-2 orders. Does anyone else do this? It just seems to be the easiest way to save time & gas.

I happen to go by a post office nearly every day so I can ship more often, but there is nothing wrong wtih picking one day to ship.  Just make sure you choose the furthest out mail by date

The bad side is, I like to get everyone's orders sent ASAP. I guess I was looking for some wise advice. :)

Erin, the other possibility is to use the PBS printable postage.  I've been using it for a few months now, and I love it!  Not only can I just drop my books in the blue box on my way to work, I also get my credit as soon as I mark it mailed.  It doesn't work for me every time (for example if I need to send 1st class), but it is a good option.

If that doesn't work for you, I wouldn't feel too bad about a weekly run to the post office.  I think there have always been folks here who do that, and I've never seen that it causes problems.  As Leslie noted, the key is just to choose the latest possible mail date.

I think quite a few members ship only once a week. I go within a block of the PO every day on my way to and from work, but I have started to hold a few orders to group them together and only go once or twice a week. I just don't want to waste all that time going every other day. When I was new every order was accepted as soon as I could pull the book from my shelf and then marked to ship within 2 days(I usually did it the next day). As you are here longer you will definitely slow down :)

I am trying to work down to Saturday's only, but so far am down to Wednesdays and Saturdays.  You have 5 days to accept and then another 5 days to mail.  So... if you wait a few days to accept.. then you can plan your shipping day to be the day of the week you wish to go.

The downside is the wait time for the requestor, but with gas prices so crazy these days... fewer trips can help.

Good luck!

Do you have an APC (automated postal machine) at your post office?  If so, buy stamps there for the exact amount of the 1lb and 2lb rates for media mail.  Buy several at one time (for example, I buy 10 at a time).  Then when I get orders, I sitck a stamp on there and then drop it in a blue box.  It is best if you have a postage or kitchen scale in your home to double check postage rates, if you choose to do it this way.

Melanie, that is definitely me :) When I first joined I was going to the post office whenever I had an order.

Now I also do a once a week trip.  Usually Mondays for me.  Not only does the gas add up, but the wait times (at least at my PO) can be a bit annoying.  I will usually just wait to accept a request.  If it is going to be longer than a few days wait (for example, if I get a request on Tuesday and know I am not going to go the PO for a full week), I will usually just PM the requestor and let them know when I plan to head to the PO.

Occasionally, when I have alot of orders build up, though, I will head to the PO twice a week.  I agree..I think alot of members are choosing the once a week mailing... it really becomes expensive and a hassle otherwise.

I use the APC machine and since it is about 1/2 mile from my house it isn't that bad to get to and if I was energetic enough I'd walk up there....but it is too darn hot right now!  So that is a good tip if the book is over 7oz (or is it 8oz now?).

PBS postage is another way but you have to decide if you want to pay the fees.  for me it isn't worth it and I don't need the credits right away.

I am kind of obsessive about wanting to get my books out ASAP. I know we're not rated about shipping time (like on eBay for example), but I find I LIKE getting that book off my (real) shelf, packing up the bubble mailer, etc. Plus, I think that the faster I get it out, the faster I get that credit (I don't use printable postage). I'm lucky to have a PO across the street from work and next to my gym. If it wasn't for convenience, I might not go as often.

I go to the PO twice a week - Monday and Thursday.  If I'm going to the grocery store and have some books to mail, I'll take them along as we have a postal annex there.  I used to go almost every day, with 1-2 books, but found that was costing extra gas, etc.  Pat

Someone else already recommended using the PBS Printable Postage, but I want to second that option, because I am a HUGE fan of it.  For only .61 extra, I don't have to ever go to the Post Office, and I couldn't make a trip there that cheaply because of the cost of gas anyway.  So convenient, and I'm helping in a little way to help support the site, too, which makes me happy.

Plus, you get a cool little flag icon near your name!  *smile*  (although some sort of system glitch has caused my icon to disappear for some reason... am anxiously awaiting getting it back.)

Edited to add:  Oh, and using Printable Postage gets you a guaranteed Instant Credit as soon as you mark the book mailed.  Instantaneous!

I totally agree with the above posters.  Printable postage is sooooo easy.  I get about 75% of my books out the day after they are requested (the rest not too long after) and you can't beat instant credit.

I guess I am lucky that I live only 3 minutes from the PO and I pass by it 4 days a week.

So...I guess I am not much help lol

Even tho we can drop our pkgs off at the back door of the PO, because we use printed postage, and we are often out more than once a week, it is just easier for hubby to wrap the books in batches rather than wrapping a book everytime we get an order. It's not really an inconvenience to go to the PO, it's more the interruption of other things to go wrap a book, so he only does them once a week or sometimes twice.

(Also, we could leave them out for the the carrier, but we are on a walking route and we don't want to burden him, so we almost never leave books for him to take.)

I only mail on Saturdays as I don't drive and the PO is not within walking distance.

I use PBS postage and DC on almost all of my package.  I think it is easier then sticking all the stamps on.  Occasionally, I have to go into the PO-not a problem for me.  I pass with in a block of the PO 5 days a week and it takes about 2 minutes to pop in/drop book in the blue box.  I also rarely leave books for the mailman to pick up...letters sometimes, but not packages

During the school year, when I am teaching, I usually only mail on Saturdays, since there is no post office close to my school and it's a challenge to get to the one near my home before they close.  In the summer, though, I go to the post office pretty often because it is right across from my gym and in the same shopping center as where my 16-year old daughter works.

I am a newbie so far I have gone everytime I get a request  which means last week I was at the post office 3 days in a row.  I will have to try the once a week drive by.
