Rant time:

I have two RC's on my account. No library books, and if it's a hardcover to include the dustjacket. I know a lot of people will immediately reject a request if it has an RC, no matter what it is. I don't really care about that. What does bug me is when people ACCEPT a request even though the book obviously violates the RC. One person PM'd me after accepting, asking if it was ok to send me a library book. I would have PM'd him back saying I didn't want it, but he marked it mailed WITHIN 24 HOURS. I had no time to answer back. I haven't received it yet, but I'm afraid if I mark it RWAP I'll be the one in the wrong, even though he totally ignored my RC. *grrrrr*

Is this a common problem people have?

There is no way you'd be in the wrong marking a book RWAP if it violates your RC, sending you a PM saying they are sending it anyway certainly doesn't make it right. Mark it RWAP and if you want your credit back, tell them so. If they refuse, I would send their PM to the Team showing that they knowingly sent a book that violated your RCs.

Your RCs are not subjective at all, I don't see how people could be getting them wrong. If they are doing it to you, they are most likely doing it to others so marking them RWAP gives the site the information they need to deal with a member who repeatedly ignores RCs.

I have never had anyone ignore my dustjacket RC, and even my more strict one when I am getting a book for the library. A few smelled like they might have ignored my smoke RC, but I give them the benefit of the doubt that the books had been received used and didn't smell the odor on them.

Sorry you are getting bum swappers, That is not the norm and hopefully your run of bad ones has earned your a run of really really good ones.

Julie, I'm sorry that happened!  You may want to double check to confirm that your RCs are turned on. (They can be toggled on and off.)  Assuming they were on, they'll be attached to the "details" of the transaction.  You have every right to mark the book RWAP and to request a credit refund.

I would RWAP that book in a heartbeat.

You are definitely not in the wrong. If someone had done that to me, I'd be seriously fuming. And don't be afraid to contest this. If someone does something thoughtless and annoying to you, go ahead and teach them a lesson and feel good about it.

Are you sure that you have the RC's turned on? It's easy to fill out the RC box and then forget to click on the "Yes" box to turn them on.

You might want to double-check that they're on if you're getting so many people ignoring them. Just in case!

Oops! Just saw that Patty said the same thing! That's what I get for skimming the responses!

As usual, I agree with Melanie (and other comments before me).  Double check if your RC was turned on, but otherwise yours are basic and actually common for PBS members.   Feel free to RWAP without guilt.

Are you sure the book is coming from the same person who PM'd you? Is it possible that the person who PM'd you declined to mail and the book order was passed to a second sender who mailed it fast? Just a thought ... don't know if you double checked on that.

Anyway, if it is the same person, absolutely RWAP it!

Thanks for the help everyone!

I double checked to make sure my RCs were turned on, and they definitely are. I've had the "no library books" RC for several months and this is the third it's happened. Both people in the past were very courteous about the mistake. I think they might have mixed up my requests with someone else's. Either way, no harm done since I got the credit back both times.

I'm just annoyed that this person clearly read it, understood it, and then sent the book without waiting for my reply! Sara, good call on double checking to see if it was the same person- it is.

At this point I'm just going to wait for the book to actually arrive. Maybe I'll be less peeved by then.

Sorry, just thinking out loud ... is this situation even possible?

Sender 1 would need to click to accept the RC in order to see the OP's name in order to PM her.

I suppose Sender 1 could cancel the order after sending the PM ... and let it pass to Sender 2 ... but Sender 1 would still have intended to send out a book that violates the RC.

RWAP that member so fast his head spins!

He was in the wrong for ignoring your RC and he knows it. He's probably hoping sending the PM at the last minute gets him out of the jam. Be polite but firm in telling this member he knowingly ignored your RC, did not allow you time to answer his PM, should give you the credit back pronto!

Good luck with this, Julie!

Is this a common problem people have?

I'm not sure how common it is in general but I've had problems with people ignoring my RC (no smoke and wrap in plastic).  I will always RWAP a book if it violates my RC even if I don't ask for my credit back.  I feel it's my duty to hold them accountable for their bad behavior.  If I hold them accountable, perhaps they will stop the bad behavior and start following the rules here.

keep the pm and if they sent you a library book RWAP it and ask for credit back.  If they give you any trouble about it send it in to the website owner and ask for help.  For 3 out of 4 RWAP, I had to ask for help to get my credit back.

I've had it happen to me. I have the same conditions listed as you - no library books and if hardback, I'd like the jacket. He sent me an ex-library book. When I sent him a pm and asked about it, he said I should feel lucky to have received such a nice book and that the site is for USED books. :-b  What a jerk. I'm going to have to start not being so nice about it and start giving people the feedback they deserve!!

Yes you should Jenny. Not marking such transactions RWAP just makes these people think they can get away with ignoring RCs.

I'd never had someone so blatantly disregard my RCs, but it's finally happened.

I request no ex-library copies, and today I received an ex-library copy. I checked to make sure that my conditions applied to this order, and they did. While I'm not happy it's ex-lib (because nearly all of the ex-library copies I've received here have been unpostable), it's also unpostable due to some staining on the page edges as well as two pages inside the book. It's a pretty popular book so I can probably recoup the credit, but this is really disappointing to me. Normally people get really nervous about RC's and just decline (seriously, if he had, it would have gone on to someone without RC's maybe, but since it's unpostable chances are they would have caught it and marked it...I hope...I made sure to flip through pages just to see if just my RC was violated or if there was something else the matter, too).

So I feel everyone's pain in this thread, and hope that we all have more positive transactions in the days, weeks, and months to come.
