Macy is an ER nurse with a past, and Deputy Fletcher has problems of his own. The two meet at the scene of a crime, and must work together to solve a crime.

I thought this book was good, and the characters interesting. I have enjoyed other books by this author in the past, and this one was no exception.

Fabulous beginning to new medical series

Candace Calvert begins a new medical romance series, and By Your Side is an excellent first installment. Emergency Room nurse Macy Wynn has learned to be a tough survivor through experiences from her past. She trusts no one except herself and has built a life for herself through hard work and determination. During a traffic accident which resulted in the closing of the highway, she meets Deputy Fletcher Holt, a Houston native temporarily transplanted while his mom battles cancer and his dad completes an out-of-town contract. Fletcher believes God has a plan, but he struggles with who is in control of the final outcome.

As the first book in a series, this book obviously could be read as a stand-alone story although the groundwork was laid for Taylor Cabot and Seth Donovan's tale in book two. Both characters were prominent in By Your Side, and portions of the story were from Taylor's point of view, but this in no way detracted from Macy and Fletcher's story. This book dealt with some tough issues life isn't always fair, individuals can't control everything, and people sometimes let you down when you trust them. Macy recalled lessons learned from a former foster mom about what makes a home and family. She also remembered the trust this mom had in God. Fletcher realized that, no matter how hard he tried, the results were still in God's hands rather than his.

This book was a page-turner for me, and I'm not at all doing it justice with this review. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance or suspense stories. (Although there was one scene where someone attempted to rape a woman, but it was not too detailed and was very brief less than two pages. I would take that into consideration when recommending to younger readers.) To me, the romance was not the main focus of the story. The suspense was almost as prominent as the romance. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and greatly anticipate reading more of Ms. Calvert's work.

I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.
