An excellent read. The chapters switch from Law's point of view to Katie. Katie can see ghosts, and communicate with them. Law's father is black, his mother is white, and he struggles with his identity, history, past, how to live in the culture we have now, etc.

The plot focuses on saving a historical building from being torn down. But, it's not so clear cut as that. The book really deals with A LOT - race, reparation, anger, slavery, white people and black people living together in this same culture, etc.

I'm actually surprised how much the author could pack into this book, considering it isn't that long. I'm also surprised at how well it was done. The philosophy, questions, explorations of culture and self are there. But, they don't overwhelm the "action" in the plot. I read this in less than 2 days.

I think it would be a great book for teens, not only because it's an engaging plot, but also due to the ideas presented in it about race.
