A great book for horse lovers, no matter the age. Kathleen Duey's writing is wonderful! She fluctuates from warm to sad to grave even graver to funny and carries you with her back to happy again. These 'Spirit' series book are great additions to the movie and help explain the origins of the handsome Spirit and shy Rain. Who their parents and grand parents were and what happened to them. Awesome! I love the Sierra book especially. Sierra is the daughter of Bonita, who you've already met or will meet in another book. Sierra gets lost from her herd, ends up at an Indian camp with...and...well I can't tell everything, but this series is great!
I love how the horse' s body language is explained and how horses 'talk' to each other. If you know horses, it is easy to picture the events Duey describes. She clearly has watched horses and understands how they think and move...most of the time. My critique is that sometimes she throws in a few whinnies and actions that are far-fetched and unlikely for a horse to do/feel, but that's my opinion. It's fiction, anyway, so who cares!?
I like how horses just 'become' pregnant. Duey describes the foals as tickly new feelings or presences within the mares. She never is graphic or explicit with anything. Her writing is clean and fresh.
