Wealthy Adriana Ford is a retired actress. Successful and talented, she moved to an estate with several family members and friends. Family members who took the Ford name for whatever reason. Believing that someone may be trying to kill her, Adriana meets with Maud Silver, giving her name as âMrs. Smithâ. Odd occurrences have prompted to contact Maud Silver. She believes that someone may be trying to kill her. She believes that someone attempted to poison her. Someone who may have also shoved her down a flight of stairs. Having been told that Miss Silver can help, she decides after the interview that she may be mistaken until two sudden deaths at her estate change her mind The real question is Does someone want to kill Adriana Ford?

Written in 1953, the novel features Maud Silver, un unobtrusive retired governess who became a private investigator in London. Miss Silver has a way of becoming part of the background and listens carefully to those who need her help. She can recall complete conversations to put tacts together needed to solve the cases she encounters. This book is part of series of thirty-two featuring Maud Silver yet each of the author's stories is fresh and unique as the first and allows Miss Silver emerge as a strong complex character.
