These plays are somewhat dated as they were written between 1933 and 1938: Post Wall Street crash of 1929; a time of labor-management strife; a time prelude to WW II; a time of left wing Commie sympathy (apparently shared by our playwright).
Waiting for Lefty
For a one-acter this play is long on characters (fifteen to be exact). Labor, in this case, is quite offset by a complete dearth on props: a buff-bare stage. Union taxi drivers are contemplating a strike. While they await their leader, Lefty, we are treated to some pros and cons, as well as cries of red and commie. But, Lefty is a no-show. At least, unlike Gidot, we find at the very end that he has good cause for absenting himself. Except for the Communist references, its a recurring theme. Executives ride high and dry while the workers sink into the quicksand. Sound familiar? It should, but with one exception: big labor isnt too far removed from big management today.
