Nomura's stories about his cruel, abusive father, surviving the Depression era, the years he spent in a Japanese-American relocation camp after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the discrimination he faced trying to get into college are heart-wrenching. The historical aspects of those stories are very interesting.

Despite the hardships of his growing up years, Nomura writes about all the joy his numerous friends, loving family, and colleagues have brought into his life.

He intentionally writes in a simplistic style that even a young adult could enjoy.
