If you'd like to stop drinking without going to AA, this book will help. If you are being affected by someone else's heavy drinking, it will also help- it cuts through the 12-Step psychobabble to offer a convincing reason for why people drink.

Specifically, Trimpey's model is that the primitive, pleasure-seeking part of the person has (let's hope temporarily) dominated the rational part of the person. His technique involves externalization, which allows the drinker to become aware of the inner dialog between the part of him that wants to drink and the part of him that wants to give it up, and, most importantly, to change the outcome of that dialog.

Although Trimpey seems to be an atheist, his models and techniques will likely appeal to conservative Christians who regard the New-Aginess of 12-Step recovery programs with suspicion.

Trimpey also offers excellent advice for spouses of heavy drinkers and alcoholics.
