I am #1 on the WL for a book.  The WL is 180+ long.  I have been offered the book FOUR TIMES in the past 10 days only to have the offer canceled each time  because of my no smoking (kindly worded, and very reasonable...just nothing from a currently smoking environment).  Now to be fair, one person responded that he/she "NEVER accepts requests with RCs regardless of what the RC is" so it's not just smokers.

**sigh**

I guess I'll get the book eventually.

Well, about that..... I would have been one of those to refuse it.  I was accused of a book "reeking of cigarette smoke," even though it came from a nonsmoking environment and had been purchased new.  Once bitten, twice shy.  Now I turn down any request that involves scent.  A no-smoking request is perfectly understandable and fair..... I just don't want to chance going through another nasty RWAP.

Some people are really touchy about RCs. You're just having a bad run. It'll be over soon.

I once had a woman buy a "quit smoking" book from me on half.com, then complained that it smelled of smoke. That one was just wrong in so many ways that I think it caused my I.Q. to plummet simply from being forced to read it.

With a long WL like that, you could have jsut run into a few posters who would rather decline and get it to a wisher with no RCS at all.  I'm sure there's people who probably do that even if their book meets the RCS when it's WL-because they don't want to deal with RCS if they don't have to.

Sometimes if it's a book you want really badly you might think about turning off your RCs.

I always figure I can smell smoke on a book well enough since I can be pretty sensitive to it.  I've never had a problem with the "not currently in a smoking environment" RC.  I do flip the pages and give it a good sniff test and send it out if I don't get a whiff of smoke from it.

Yeah, I have a keen sense of smell, too.  I've only received one book that smelled of smoke (it REEKED) but that was before my RC.  Since adding the RC, this is the longest run of refusals that I have had.  I actually had an amazing PBSer PM me about a book.  Seems that she was a smoker but the WL book in question had just been purchased and had not been in her home.  I accepted, she sent it and everything was just peachy keen.

I"m not unreasonable, just asthmatic with severe smoke allergies! LOL!

BookwormKath, I'm with you. Same thing happened to me. So now I refuse anything re; smoking/odors. I wish I didn't have to, but I don't want to be put in that position ever again.

I have to turn down requests, because I am smoker. I do not smoke in my house, or read while smoking.

Also I buy them second hand, and since i am a smoker, i can't notice to smell of smoke, So even though they dont come in contact with smoke, I worry that I can't smell it.

I turn down the requests to keep myself from having to deal with a problem.

If I had the book, I would send it to you! I think your RC is very reasonable. I have a very sensitive nose, and can pick up smoky odors quite easily. I've never worried about books I have sent to people with odor RCs and never had a problem.

Every now and then I receive a smoky book, which I strongly dislike, but not enough to create RCs (at least not yet).

Once I got a box of books from eBay... they were all in way worse condition than described, and the sender actually left a cigarette butt in the bottom of the box!!! SO GROSS. But a good dousing with baking soda eventually made the smell mostly go away.

I had the same problem that Bast and Bookwormkath had. No one in my home smokes so I used to accept the "not currently in a smoking environment" RCs. Until I had someone RWAP a book I sent because they said it smelled of smoke. I didn't notice anything before I sent the book but then again my sense of smell might not be that great. So now I just don't do any "smell" RCs

My daughter has severe allergies to cig smoke and mildew/mold, but so far I've been lucky. The only issue I've had was with one book that I quickly scanned through and it seemed fine, but then when my son was reading it, he found writing on many pages nearer to the spine, so I missed it at a quick glance and it was too late to do anything.

I have this bigger issue with the books I want to read apparently don't appeal to anyone else or will be traded ferociously for the first few months and then no one posts another copy. I make it to the top 10 on the waitlist and get stuck there. I finally gave up on three of my requests and went out and bought them.

I hope that those of you with severe allergies (or those with family members who do) state that in your RCs. I would decline any such requests simply because I wouldn't want to be the cause of someone going into anaphylactic shock--I don't smoke, but these are used books and I have no idea just HOW sensitive you might be, or where the book was before it got to me. I think if I had severe allergies I wouldn't take a chance on something like PBS, to be honest. I think it would be akin to someone with a severe peanut allergy buying a cookie from a bake sale...sort of like Russian roulette.

*hugs* LeeAnne, hope you get a copy of the book soon.  As you can see, there's reasons on both sides of this issue.

I would send a book to you with that RC.

I'd also decline a credit refund to anyone who RWAPs me for a smoky book since I live in a nonsmoking house which is all a "not currently in a smoking home" RC is requesting. It's not like I have smoky books, but if it's a used book, I can sometimes detect a slightly smoky or maybe just older book smell (I had an accident that involved head trauma years ago and my sense of smell has been off ever since). I can't really tell the difference, but I'd be willing to risk the RWAP on a nonsmoking home RC. I may have already and just don't remember.
