I read this book many years ago, maybe even in my pre-teen years. I'm 77 now; when I saw the book and a companion volume "Cow Country" I bought them for sentimental reasons and thoroughly enjoyed re-reading "Smoky" (the other volume is in my to-be-read bookshelf).
I'm pretty sure Will James was a working cowboy; the book is enhanced with excellent illustrations by the author. A book for western fans of any age.
