Illus in black and white. Pete and his friends love to play pick-up soccer, and they're getting so good that when one of the kids' dads sees them in action, he delares it's time they formed an official team. This sounds like a great idea, but the kids seem to have less fun, the more involved their over-eager parents get.

At the Pleasant Avenue lot, soccer's always a kick. Pete and his friends love to play pickup games, and they're getting really good! So good, in fact, that when one kid's dad sees them play, he offers to coach them ans an official league team. Sounds totally cool.

Then the season starts for real. And suddenly the Smashers are practicing from dawn till dusk, doing push-ups till they pant, and facing teams that look as if they feast on raw meat! Their hard-nosed coach loses his temper even when they win, and the other parents can't stop having sideline fights! Pete and his friends finally have to wonder: Is being a Smasher really worth the pressure? Or is it time to blow it off and head back to the lot?
