When I went to check on the status of some of the books I've mailed out, I came across some results I'm not familiar with. Can anyone tell me what the postal status of this book would be? It's shown as delivered, but I don't know what the two unknown codes mean.
Thank you!

An unusual entry Meghan, no idea what it means. If the book isn't marked received soon, call your local PO and ask...if there's a problem they will call Richmond and ask. |

That's so funny... I came on tonight to ask the exact same question. A book I sent on Oct 7th is going to FL... here's the details on mine... at least you know you're not the only one:
The last two entries were just entered today even though they say the 15th. Unlike Meghan's mine says ARRIVAL AT UNIT before the UNKNOWNS but they never posted it actually being delivered. Last Edited on: 10/22/10 10:57 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

Who really knows. I had a book that was scanned: Jackson, MS Memphis, TN Jackson, MS New Orleans, LA |

Very, very odd. Hmmm....guess we'll see what happens. *sigh* |

I work at the post office. This is the first time I have seen the abbreviations and have no idea what they mean, either. |

I PM'd my Receiver to check and see if maybe she'd received the book anyway and just hadn't had time to mark it received. She wrote me back today and said she'd moved and was hoping the book was being forwarded. Could that have something to do with those last two entries? If Meghan's Receiver has also moved... maybe that's the key. |

Take the DC # and paste it into the box at www.usps.com. You can see the actual records there. I have a couple that say "Unknown" at PBS, but they say things like "Sorting Complete" and "Out for Delivery" at USPS.com. |
I also came in here to ask the same question. I have the same two "unknown" codes. The PO website is saying it was delivered today, but not here. I have had several other books this past week get delivered without the strange codes:

The fact that it has happened to 3 people here in 2 days makes me wonder if there is some kind of glitch in the post office tracking system...or at least in the way they are reporting info back to PBS. I would check the DCs at the post office website and see if those Unknown entries are showing there as well. |

When the mail first comes in in the morning, before it is sorted to the routes, we scan it Arrived At Unit. After the mail is sorted, we scan a barcode that is posted at the distribution case, Distribution Complete. ("Distribution" is the postal word for "sorting") Then when the mail is all distributed in the Post Office Box Section, we have another barcode posted there in the box section that we scan, and that is the one that generates the "Out For Delivery" message.
Looks like PBS is recognizing that these last 2 scans were done, but doesn't know how to interpret them, so it calls them "unknown". But I'm just guessing! |

Very good suggestion of checking the DC at USPS.com, here's what they had to say.... keep in mind that with my situation I've got the extra factor that my Receiver has moved and didn't update her addy here at PBS before my book was mailed out to her:

The suggestions that this could be a problem on the PBS end makes sense to me. Who knows. |

I agree there must be some sort of glitch or change in the USPS system. I have been on vacation, and one of the books sent to me is sitting at my post office. My postmaster knows I am on vacation, so it's not like she's doing any more scans than normal.
I have no idea why those last three scans would be there. I really doubt she's scanning my packages for fun! |

Here is what the USPS website says:
Interesting that the USPS website is not showing the last scans. |

Same here, folks, and I have 2 books that have had normal scans (even delivered scans) and the weirdo codes just showed up today. Glad to know that maybe it's just a glitch in the PBS-USPS communications. |

I agree...It must be a glitch. When I checked the USPS site, the DC information ends after it shows delivered. The two oddball codes are not shown there in any form. The receiving member hasn't marked it as delivered yet and also hasn't returned the PM I sent because of the strange data in order to make sure it had, in fact, been delivered to her. Very strange....

LOL, I came to find out the same thing on a package in CA. |
Looks to me to be some sort of system test. PC is always first, OF exactly 30 min later, DX 2 hours later. |
Some books I had sent to my DGD had those same pieces of information on them. The books were delivered to her. I'd guess it's something in the postal system. Pat |

Good eye, Melanie, catching that the time difference between those two stamps, here, is always exactly 30 minutes. That does sound like a system-generated thing rather than an actual scan. How interesting! |
Yeah that is very odd about the 30 minute seperation. Heard from my receiver today she got the book! Yay! But she said she had to pay extra (2.77) for it to be forwarded to her new address, she said they said it was because it was media mail. Learn something new everyday I guess. |
PC=Processing Complete (the mail is all sorted, either to the carrier routes, the box section, or caller/holdouts) OF=Out For delivery (the box section mail has all been distributed and carriers out delivering their routes) |
I guess the key here is that all the books from those of us who've said we've seen those wacky codes have gotten to their destinations. But if anyone ever has one go missing and stay that way, might want to look for those entries. Maybe someday we'll see more of the pattern... then again... maybe not. |

I had one recently at your sister site that was supposed to go to OK, just a 100 miles from me. first scan, It ended up 4 states away. Next entry was: MISSENT Then, next scan, it appeared making it's way BACK this way to OK . LOL I had never seen that one before! Hope I don't again, either. :) Last Edited on: 10/27/10 12:20 AM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

I think these scans were actually something going on in the PBS or Endicia system not in the USPS system. I was in my TA looking at an old transaction and noticed these scans on the book I was in, so I checked some others, and every one I checked had the PC and OF scan. Since they didn't show on the USPS site for current books and show up on old transactions (always with the same time difference and either after the arrival at unit or delivery if no arrival scan was done) it seems like PBS tinkering. |
