I just got a book, and it had a hole drilled from front cover, all the way through the book, and out the back cover in the lower right of the book. It looked like someone had taken a small drill bit or something to it [it is about the size of a small hole punch, but through the entire book].

It doesn't affect the reading, nor the spine, so I'm not going  to mark it rwap. However, anyone come across anything like this before? It is just weird and made me kind of laugh. [which I really needed this week].

LOL Kath! Maybe they used an industrial strenght hole puncher!

Derrick - I'm curious. Did the package have a hole too? How big is the hole?

How could it not affect the reading?

DG-I just checked the packaging and it was hole-free. the hole measures just over 1/8 of an inch. [3/16th's to be precise]

Ray-because the book has a HUMONGOUS bottom margin[something around 1in] and the hole is about 1/2in up from the bottom. Weird huh? :D

I've seen some used book stores punch a hole in the front cover for their books so they can't be returned.  One UBS near me does this for their giveaway (overstocked) books on the Free shelf.

So, possibly a way to mark it as a giveaway???

I once got a book like that and it was marked from a used book store. Except the punch was a heart shape, not just a regular hole.

Interesting!

I could understand somebody making a hole in the cover...but through the whole book? Even if the book is not too thick, you would need a drill or something to make the hole without damaging the rest of the pages.

Maybe it was an outhouse book--secured on a chain through the hole on a peg in the little house out back for reading enjoyment? ROFL...just kidding, but it could happen! :D

As an entomologist, I would say there is a possibility of book-boring beetle larvae here. You would be surprised at how even looking are the holes these insects can make. You don't often see these anymore, but they exist.
