Southern Peach Pie and A Dead Guy is the first in the Poppy Peters mystery series. Poppy Peters has suffered an injury that ends her career as a ballerina. Having always wanted to bake like her Grandmother Liz, Poppy enrolls in the Calle Pastry Academy in Georgia, clear across the country from her ex boyfriend and family in Oregon.

Poppy's first couple of days at the Academy are a comical disaster, but with the help of her charming "nervous baker" roommate Bree and fellow student Cole, she settles into the routine. The school is purportedly haunted by the ghost of Old Man Thomas Calle who mysteriously disappeared without a trace one day and student Thomas Fox has also disappeared without a trace.

Poppy's nemesis Georgina is determined to sabotage her and Professor Stuart Sellers doesn't like her either. When someone steals a valuable bag of black truffles from the school kitchen, they are the first to point the finger at Poppy. Determined to clear her name and find the real thief, Poppy sets out with the help of Cole to sneak into the Professor's office, unfortunately they discover his dead body instead.

Clues lead to a peach farm in Alabama, and Poppy discovers a dangerous man has followed her home on holiday vacation. The hunky Detective Derek Reid believes her innocence and comes to her rescue in Oregon.

The Academy is having a contest to find the perfect desert. The winner will receive the opportunity to intern in Paris, and Poppy is determined to win the contest or at least make sure that Georgina doesn't win. The various recipes included will make your mouth water.

A fun, quick afternoon read with a cast of likeable characters. I'll be looking forward to more adventures with this trio.
