As a member of the body he is essentially different from his Western brother, but being of the body he is governed by the same head and rejoices and suffers with the other members. The Christian Chinese is not a creation of the fancy but exists in thousands, though probably more to be found in villages and country houses than in treaty ports, and the neighbourhood of Western colleges and schools. But to come to the difficulty. Is there not a danger of such Christian Chinese becoming separated from the rest of the body ? There is a danger and it is met in various ways. The Roman missions bring their converts into the ark of a Church which is ordered from Western Rome ; the Protestant missions bring their converts into an ark of Western design and leave them to steer their own course, native pilots in foreign craft. The Anglican Communion is boldly attempting to show that the ark uf Christ's Church, though one ark, is for the East a ship of Eastern type, and for the West a Western craft, but withal one ark of salvation from the waves of this troublesome world. The facing of the difficulty is bringing its own reward. Acknowledgement of difference in function commands respect, and mutual respect brings sympathy which is a. bond of unity. The Western Church sends her missionaries to China, and they find the Chinese different in almost every way.
