Jessi St. James has got to get a life. Too many hours studying ancient artifacts has given the hardworking archaeology student a bad case of sex on the brain. So she figures she must be dreaming when she spies a gorgeous half-naked man staring out at her from inside the silvery glass of an ancient mirror. But when a split-second decision saves her from a terrifying attempt on her life, Jessi suddenly finds herself confronting six and a half feet of smoldering, insatiable alpha male.
Heir to the arcane magic of his Druid ancestors, eleven centuries ago Cian MacKeltar was trapped inside the Dark Glass, one of four coveted Unseelie Hallows, objects of unspeakable power. When the Dark Glass is stolen, an ancient enemy will stop at nothing to reclaim it, destroying everything in his path -- including the one woman who may just hold the key to breaking the ninth-century Highlander's dark spell. For Jessi, the muscle-bound sex god in the mirror is not only tantalizingly real, he's offering his protection -- from exactly what, Jessi doesn't know. And all he wants in exchange is the exquisite pleasure of sharing her bed.
Yet even as Cian's insatiable hunger begins to work its dark magic on Jessi, his ancient enemy is about to obtain the final and most dangerous of the Unseelie Hallows -- and the ninth-century Highlander must stop him from getting it. Nothing less than the very fabric of the universe and two passionately entwined lives are at stake -- as Cian and Jessi fight to claim the kind of love that comes along but once in an ice age....« less
This is the second time now that I've been a bit disappointed with a book in this series. I had really hoped it would be better than the last one (The Immortal Highlander), but it's really just more of the same. The stories just keep going "Oh, no! We have a deadly problem! Let's run to Castle MacKelter!" It's really getting old and it makes me not look forward to the future books that will eventually come out in this series. (As is promised by the author.)
This is book 8 in the series. I just love these time travel romance novels. KMM takes me back to a time when romance novels where more descriptive and sexual. In fact I even recently received Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon and can't wait to read it as I was told this is very similar to KMM.
The story into which Spell of the Highlander is embedded is fascinating. It is a story that spans KMM's Highlander series, and leads into her brand new 'Fever' series. The book is worth reading just to understand key elements of this overall epic! In fact it is a must have.
Cian is a powerful Druid, and there are reasons to believe that his time being trapped in the mirror was by design, to bring him forward, with his kinsmen, also trapped in the 21st century from the 16th century, to fight an epic battle that is still to come in the series. But the fun part is watching this arrogant former Celtic Laird from the 9th century make adjustments to dealing with a modern woman and modern society. He is an old fashioned man with the manners of a caveman, but also one of the most compelling characters in this genre today. And watching him interact with his kinsmen, protagonists from other books by the same author, is priceless!
Liked this one. Not as great as some of the others in the series, but still worth the read.
Cian is a powerful Druid from the 9th century who has been stuck in a mirror (snickers) for the past century. When he meets Jessi St. James, a 24 year old going for her PhD, he swears to protect her from the people who would try to kill her because she's seen the mirror (and the man inside). They return to the motherland and meet up with Dageus, Drustran, Chloe, and Gwen at Castle Keltar and the story unfolds from there.
Overall, the plot was a bit slow for me, but still held my interest with the great characters of Jessi and Cian.
Currently 4/5 Stars.

I normally don't read time travel or Highlander books, but I make an exception for KMM's books. How can you go wrong with a six and a half feet, all alpha male Druid Highlander? I loved Cian's character although he came off as such a cave man. He has so many super powers that it's hard to keep track of them all. What I didn't like? The heroine. She's getting her Ph.D, but is quite juvenile at times. One of my pet peeves is the nearly 30 year old beautiful modern heroine who doesn't know she's beautiful and is still a virgin. Why are there so many of these in KMM's Highlander series? Why is it ok for the man to be this sex god alpha male who has bedded many women, but the woman is an innocent 21st century virgin? Such a double standard.
The romance was ok. There are some steamy sections, but I read this book and the others in KMM's Highlander series to learn more about the Fae because I love her other (Fever) series. It was good to see more information about the Seelie, Unseelie, Druids, and the Fae. This is not the best book to get started on the Highlander series. The character development and romance are far better in her earlier Highlander series books.
