Two in a matter of hours! It's amazing. The flow is back so I will hopefully be able to finish this soon. Thank you for your patience.

Alex walked into his darkened house and shut the door. The wide open hallway, lined with a thick Persian carpet and drapes hanging from the walls every few feet stretched out before him. Most of the empty house was the same way, though he preferred to keep his room empty and unlived in. When his parents had died in his early teenage years in a car wreck, they had left the house to him when he would be able to care for it. He made just enough money to pay for heating, electricity, and a few other living needs, but not much more than that. He spent more time at the Home than his house anyway.

Shadows dripped down from every shade, every hidden corner, oozing and swirling around him in the darkness. Yet another reason for Alex to not return home, for they were always watching him, just as they now seemed always to be watching Maggie. The shapeless forms twisted to follow him as he walked through the abandoned house. Walking slowly up the stairs and through the rooms until he reached his own, Alex tried to ignore the wraiths. One safely in his room, he slammed the door and collapsed against the back of it.

They could not enter his room without permission, though they tried again and again. Quickly pulling out a candle from a drawer next to his bed, he lit it and from the candle lit a stick of nag champa incense. As the sweet smell permeated the still air, Alex took a deep breath and whispered one word under his breath.

“Sid.”

While he waited in the semi-darkness, Alex could feel the cold breath of something on his neck. He shivered and stood straighter, holding his resolve to not back away from this subtle challenge.

Wow. I love how this is carried over from part 3. Now it seems that Alex, the caretaker, is afraid of shadows. No longer only the mad delusions of Maggie. Maybe something is out there, stalking the yellow colored walls. Great job Sky.

Indeed. This story takes place in a world filled with these shadows, and it's only one of many short stories to come about this land. I think that I am going to title the book "Where Shadows Lie."
