The door creaked open and I knew it wasn't the orderlies. Because I never sleep I always know when someone is in my room and I can hear the subtleties of their unique sounds that show they are living. That is part of why the shadows terrify me, they make little noise and I never know if they are real or not.
Anyway, this new person was not an orderly, for one of them would have knocked, it wasn't Alex for he would have immediately said my name upon entering. I could not recognise the footsteps, but the breathing was familiar. It had to be Ethan... Well, maybe it was his other part, Ellen, either way, I knew who it was.
Slowly I am turning to him, and my eyes widen in surprise. A feral look has crept into his eyes, and his face is marred by a snarl that's causing him to look less like a human and more like a prowling cat. I begin to scream, but only manage to release a small noise before his hand darts forward and grabs me. He pushes me back onto the bed, and wraps his other hand around my throat.
As I lose the air that my lungs contain, and gasp for more I try to plead with him, but only the smallest of noises are released.
"So Maggie," his voice drips contempt. "You are nothing now, Alex never liked you anyway. He will be mine, and I will never again have to look at your face."
His face is frightening me more than the shadows do at the moment, but I have to fight back. I try to hit his back hard enough so that he will let go, but it is a useless attempt. I can feel my eyes bulging out of my head and I know that I am about to pass out, but something flickers behind Ethan. The looming face of one of my eternal guards appears over his shoulder. I am trying to warn him, but my tongue is swelling in my mouth that is as dry as paper.
Suddenly the pressure around my throat ceases and Ethan drops to the floor violently shaking. I can see a look of pleasure spreading across the shadows face as it disappears, fading back into the darkness. Glancing to Ethan, I notice that he is seizing up on the floor.
"He...lp..." I cough out.
A swirling shape begins to form above Ethan's head and I know he is done for because that is one of the shadows. Ignoring the other shadows in the room I know I have to get out. I dash for the door and into the hall, crashing into the floor just outside of the room. I am still gasping for air, but the other people need to know about this. So I begin to scream at the top of my lungs.
