I was checking my Wish List page and noticed that on one of my books I'm waiting for, my position went back one - I went from 4 to 5 in line waiting for the book.

Can someone please explain this to me?  Does it have anything to do with not being on Auto-Request for the book?

Thanks!  :)

It is probably someone that was before you that was on holiday or for some other reason put their account on hold.  They took it off hold and resumed their place in the WL.  Hope that makes sense.

No. Going back a little bit is not unusual. It could happen because someone who was on Vacation hold just came back or someone got an RWAP and got placed at the beginning of the line again.

It doesn't have anything to do with whether you are on Auto request or not.

hope this helps.

Here's the Help Center explanation. I don't think its been updated since it became automatic for RWP to go back to first in the WL line so that would be another reason.

Why did I move *backward* on my Wish List?

This happens when another member who was "ahead of you" in line previously (and who got an offer of the book already) gets back into line, for one of several reasons:

  • The member's Wish List book never arrived, and was declared lost in the mail
  • The member's Wish List transaction was canceled by the sender
  • The member had had her account on hold, and has now returned from vacation and unHeld her account. She will go back into line at her previous position when she does this: if she was "ahead of you" before, you will move back a space.

Please be assured that we would NEVER put another member ahead on the Wish List without good cause--in order to go ahead of others on the Wish List, a member MUST have Wish Listed that item earlier (on an earlier date) than they did.

I've been going back and forth on some books on my WL like a yo-yo.  It must be that people are going on vacation and then returning.  It seems to be the same books.  It doesn't move more than about 2 positions.  Pat

It could also be that someone ahead of you in line was offered the book (thus moving you up in the line), but that person may have had requestor conditions that were not met (which would return them to the #1 spot and move you back.)  Hope that makes sense..... it gets confusing when the book is a popular one with many wishers and multiple copies offered at the same time!

Ah, okay.  Thanks for the heads up.  My wait time is less than a week for the two that I'm waiting for, but it just made me curious.  They're Harry Potter books, so I'm hopeful I'll move up quickly.  :)

Just out of curiosity, what's the longest wait time y'all've had to endure for a book?

I just had one offered to me and I've been on that WL for 18 months.  Another one I had on WL for nearly 2 years, at #1 the whole time, before I finally got it.

I still have one I put on my WL in August '06 that I'm waiting for. I think I've moved up 4 places since then. I'm at #1 now, but have been there for months. I did get a book I had had on the WL for 3+ years just recently--I was the only person ever wishing for it, so was thrilled when I got it. Most of the time, though, it goes quicker than that. Even books with hundreds of wishers go fast because they're more popular so more people are buying them and posting them.

Fortunately I have such a huge TBR that I really am not in a "gotta have it NOW!" kind of hurry for any book....you learn patience around here, that's for sure!

Not sure exactly, but I know I've received books that have been on my wishlist over a year :-)  Most are much quicker lol!
