This book is an unrelenting, unflinching narrative about life in North Korea, including time spent in prison camps, trading/bartering for food, and escaping. Jang's story is so very straightforward, without being gratuitous, that she presents the hardships so that the reader will know and now I cannot forget. There is no slant, no over-telling, or guessing, simply truth of never ending hunger and hardship, the baseness of humanity when everyone is fighting just to survive. I received this book from goodreads contest with expectation of fair/honest review.
