When Will Hastie returns from military service to his native Scottish village of Torfoot, he means to settle down on the family estate to a cozy life of farming. But before long, he learns something that sheds new light on the death ten years earlier of his boyhood friend and neighbor, Rae. Will's quest for truth takes him on a journey that brings romance--first, amid the brilliant sunlight of the South of France, where he meets the enchanting Frenchwoman Julie; and then home again at Torfoot, where he finds true love and a fresh appreciation for the stark beauties of the Scottish Border country. Several years after the end of WWII Will Hastie leaves the army and returns to his Scottish home, desperately missing his best friend Rae who died early in the war. In many ways life moves placidly along, but the war has altered many lives. A quest to undercover the meaning of Rae's last letter to his sister Patty leads to a surprising discovery with interesting (and satisfying) twists.

Published in 1959. While this book is listed as a romance, it is so much more! The story is set in the English/Scottish border country. D.E. Stevenson is a wonderful writer and you will be swept away to a time and place that you won't forget. I highly recommend her as an author.
