The papers that make up this volume are from three sources: General Stilwell's private field diaries, the "black notebook" in which he sometimes wrote his innermost thoughts and reflections and long letters to Mrs. Stilwell.
Anyone who still believes that "We lost China" will understand from this unsung hero that China lost China, and at no time was it in our power to prevent it. For further elucidation it should be followed by Barbara Tuchman's followup work.
