Fine, quietly horrific tale of a man whose unexpected, unwanted psychic abilities suddenly open a doorway into a world of dark secrets and darker truths.

I saw the movie first and then read the book. Even though I couldn't put the book down, I still liked the movie a bit more.

This book was written in 1958 about forty years before the movie was made. The story the movie tells is very loosely based on the book plus they modernized it and moved the locations around. I'm not terribly fond of the movie so I had no prejudice toward the book being different. The book is messy, badly written and not well thought out. The characters are all unbelievable in a 60's era soap opera sort of way. The storyline is absurd. I give it a very charitable 2 out of 5 because the concept was interesting but poorly executed.
