This is one of the best written and interesting Star Trek DS9 novels I've ever read! If you want to know what Cardassia was like right after the war, then this will tell you. Also, you get to know a lot more about Garak, one of my favorite characters!

If you ever found yourself wishing that the character of Elim Garak had appeared in every single episode of DS9, or wondered what really happened in his past with the Obsidian Order, or still believe he deserved his own spin-off series, then this is the book for you.

Told from Garak's point of view (and written by the actor who played him!), the story alternates between three different time periods: one that reveals Garak's history prior to his arrival on DS9, one that is concurrent with the events of season 7, and one that chronicles Garak's return to Cardassia after the conclusion of the Dominion War. The novel is extremely well-written and engaging, with an insight into the character that only Andrew J. Robinson himself could provide.

There are countless nods and references to characters and events from all 7 seasons of DS9, so before you begin reading, I recommend a little "Best of Garak" viewing marathon (which also just happens to include some of the best episodes of the entire series):

Past Prologue (1.2)
The Wire (2.22)
Improbable Cause (3.20)
The Die is Cast (3.21)
Our Man Bashir (4.9)
In Purgatory's Shadow (5.14)
By Inferno's Light (5.15)
In the Pale Moonlight (6.19)
The Dogs of War (7.24)
What You Leave Behind (7.25)

Of course, if you want to re-watch all 37 of the episodes that feature Garak, I certainly won't stop you ;)

The story of Garak, written by the author that played him.
