This is a sequel to "Thin Walls" and a fast-paced story of police corruption, gangs and back-alley abortions. The book takes place in 1969; a year after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Smokey Dalton and his "son", Jimmy, have fled from Memphis to Chicago and assumed new identities. Smokey is known in Chicago as Bill Grimshaw who does private investigative work (no license though). The story is told by Smokey who is a big, black man trying to make a living and raise a boy who is not his own. The characters in the book(s) are believable and most are likable - except the really bad guys, of course. The author spends time in each book giving you in-depth views of the people who are involved. She is a new author for me and I look forward to reading the entire series. There is violence and some rough language but all within context. Great book but I encourage you to read "Thin Walls" (at least) before reading this one.
