Strange Fruit
Author: Lillian smith
Into this novel of the love of a white man and a beautiful, educated Negro girl, and of the violence that was only in one sense the outcome of their love, Lillian Smith has woven all the agony and frustration, the fear and guilt, which so disturb and degrade not only the relationships of Negro and white, but the individual soul as well.

Brilliant and dark. It's no surprise that this novel about an interracial love affair in Georgia in the 1920s is going to end in violence. The surprise is how carefully all the players are characterized -- with the odd exception of the woman. No hint or justification is given as to why a black woman with a college education would be satisfied to return to her home town and a life as a domestic servant. Nevertheless, it's a stunning read.
