About migrant workers in the UK. The setting of the story is tragic and cruel, but the novel is uplifting. Lewycka has the gentle irony that Jane Austen has in her novels. She clearly understands how people are, both the cruel and the kind. This book is really worth reading.
I found this book very difficult to read. I did not think it was humorous as the description suggests. Animal lovers beware -- there are some horrible descriptions of a chicken farm.
This was a very strange story, but it did seem to keep me interested to the end. A book has to catch me pretty soon after starting it. The characters were "funky" and did some pretty weird things, but all in all it was funny, sad and in between. I ordered it because of the title. I am a "strawberry" collector.
