Not certain how to classify this read. Parts are from the past, particularly before WWII and during it as characters lived and recall those experiences. The beginning seemed slow but as I moved more into the book, I realized how deftly the author wove it all together.

This fascinating story looks at racism in America, Nazi attempts to destroy every Jewish person they could find and how contemporary society looks at life and the past. Not everyone can be a hero but those who become so are long remembered by those who outlived them.

The horrors of the concentration camps are shown through the Nazi treatment of the prisoners therein, especially those who are Jewish. We cannot become complacent even in today's world. We still need heroes - those who stand up for the differences in our society, those who will campaign for change, and those who refuse to sit by quietly in situations that should demand the attention of all citizens.
