As part of her 8th grade Georgia History class, my daughter is required to read a novel set prior to 1800. As best I can tell the locale doesn't have to be Georgia but it'd probably be good if it took place somewhere in the South. Rachel's an excellent reader so the writing doesn't have to be at the 9-12 y.o. level. Any suggestions? Has Eugenia Price written anything set in the era? Thanks for your help Tess |

Jimmy Carter wrote an excellent Historical Fiction about Georgia during the Civil War called The Hornet's Nest Although, as a mom, I can't honestly say if it was appropriate for an 8th grader, as I wasn't reading it with that 'eye'. How about the story of Mary Jemison? I remember reading it when I was young. |

I would suggest that you look into any of the follwing books by historical fiction author AnnRinaldi ( no relation to me) She has written many wonderful books for grades 5 and up and here is a list of those that would fit the time before 1800 Taking Liberty The Story Of Oney Judge, George Washington's Runaway Slave The Secret of Sarah Revere Or Give me Death: A Novel of Patrick Henry's Family Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons: The Story of Phillis Wheatley Finishing Becca: A Story About Peggy Shippen and Benedict Arnold The Fifth of march: A Story of the Boston Massacre A Ride into Morning: The Story of Tempe Wick A Break with Charity: A Story of the Salem Witch Trials
another good book about witches is Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth Speare ( Newbery award Winner) |

I read your question earlier this morning and spent most of the morning with it in the back of my head. I would reccomend The Witch of Blackbird Pond. It was one of my favorites as a child, and is still an often re-read book on my permanent bookshelf. Whatever book your daughter chooses, please post it here! I'm really interested to know what she chooses! |
