This is a great book for independent readers and pre-teens. William adopts his wonderful dog from the shelter, but his joy is shortlived. Soon his dog is under a death sentence for his prankish behavior and William turns to the townspeople to help him in the fight to save his dog. But not everyone agrees with him, certainly not Ellis Porter who lost his cat to a rogue dog. "A life for a life. A dog for his cat. It didn't matter to him which do. Riley would do fine."

My daughter loved this book but was surprised by the ending..."Mom! I thought all books were supposed to end happily ever after!"
