I had posted a book (a celebrity memoir) a few months ago and received a request for it this morning. I accepted the request and went to package the book for shipping, when I noticed that the cover of the book states that it includes a supplemental DVD of an interview with the author. I don't remember ever seeing a DVD with the book (which was purchased new from Barnes & Noble a few years ago). I checked the book and there is no DVD enclosed, but I saw a place at the back where it appears that an attachment, like a folder, had been removed. I checked the PBS guidelines and this is what it says in the Help docs: Supplementary/Accompanying Materials:
My question is this -- the DVD that was supposed to be originally included with the book is not a REQUIRED material. It's a stand-alone interview that is an "extra" feature, but not required in any way to read, or enjoy, the book. I have no idea where the DVD is and have never even seen it myself. For all I know, it was removed from the book before I bought it, but I have no idea. I didn't even realize there was supposed to be a DVD with the book when I posted it. Other than the missing DVD, the book is in brand-new condition; absolutely pristine. If the book doesn't "REQUIRE" the accompanying media, is it still OK to send? I'm worried about getting an RWAP on this if I send the book, and the requesting member hasn't answered my PM about the DVD yet. If the supplemental media is only an extra bonus feature, does that make the book unpostable if it's missing? Help, please!!!! Thanks in advance. |

It's not required, ergo you're fine, send it. Some textbooks do have "required" cds and passkeys to access answers from questions in the book and such. Well, just my 2 cents. I'd wait a bit longer and see if the requesting member responds. |

If it were me .... I would wait to hear from the other member. They may very well have ordered the book knowing that there is a DVD included ... and they may have ordered that ISBN of the book particularly to get it. I don't think you should just send it without the DVD. Although, perhaps, according to the rules it would be technically OK.

It is my understanding that supplementary MEDIA must accompany the book if it originally came with the book. eta the Help Center section:
ALL books at PBS must meet Book Condition Guidelines.hardcover books: Yes.
audio books: Yes
Ex-library books: Yes
Books that have a signature/note on the flyleaf or title page or inside front or back cover of the book: YesBookCrossing books: Yes
Books without ISBNs: Yes *
Books that originally came with accompanying media Materials: Yes IF the accompanying materials are included

The PBS listing for the book is here: http://www.paperbackswap.com/Life-Far-Jane-Fonda/book/0812975766/ The listing on PBS doesn't mention the DVD in any way. It's not mentioned in the summary, or in the lengthy description of the book. I'm confused as to why the two "Help" docs differ in what they say. The section that I copied and pasted in my original post is what I found when I looked up the Posting Guidelines for books with supplemental materials, and it specifically states that it only applies to supplemental materials that are "required." That's not the case with this DVD, since it's merely an extra bonus and has no bearing on the book itself. From what I've found on Amazon, the original hardcover didn't even have the DVD; it was only included with the paperback version. |

The front cover of the ISBN you posted indicates that an exclusive DVD is included. If I received the book without the DVD, I would mark it RWAP. You can of course contact the team for an official ruling on whether or not to post it by sending in feedback using the contact us link at the bottom of the page under the company heading. |

Yeah, you're probably right. Dang, I wish I knew what happened to the DVD now. I'll wait and see what the requestor wants to do, and if she doesn't want it, I'll take it off my shelf and keep it. I kinda want to re-read it again now, anyway! LOLOL Thanks for the help, everyone! |

Since the book itself will show up stating right on the cover that it has a DVD with it, there is a high possibility of a RWAP. The fact the hard cover didn't have it really doesn't mean anything. The member may be ordering the paperback specifically because it is supposed to have the DVD with it. I don't know why the wording in that Help Doc is different, though I do see that in that area, that is the only section on Media supplemental, it doesn't say that media supplemental that isn't "required" for use can be missing either. I can just say that it has always been my understanding that for NON-MEDIA supplemental it matters if it is required or not, but for MEDIA supplemental it always has to be there if it was originally sold with the book.
