I had posted a book (a celebrity memoir) a few months ago and received a request for it this morning.  I accepted the request and went to package the book for shipping, when I noticed that the cover of the book states that it includes a supplemental DVD of an interview with the author.  I don't remember ever seeing a DVD with the book (which was purchased new from Barnes & Noble a few years ago).  I checked the book and there is no DVD enclosed, but I saw a place at the back where it appears that an attachment, like a folder, had been removed.

I checked the PBS guidelines and this is what it says in the Help docs:

Supplementary/Accompanying Materials:

  • Books that require supplementary Media materials MAY be posted -  the supplementary Media materials MUST be included.

    • supplementary Media materials include CD(s)/CD-ROMs/DVD(s)/VHS tape(s)
    • if the book originally included supplementary Media materials, the supplementary materials must accompany the book for the book to be postable.
    • The supplementary materials cannot be posted alone - both the book and the supplementary media must be included in the posting.
    • These combination listings are valued at 1 credit.

My question is this -- the DVD that was supposed to be originally included with the book is not a REQUIRED material.  It's a stand-alone interview that is an "extra" feature, but not required in any way to read, or enjoy, the book.  I have no idea where the DVD is and have never even seen it myself.  For all I know, it was removed from the book before I bought it, but I have no idea.  I didn't even realize there was supposed to be a DVD with the book when I posted it.  Other than the missing DVD, the book is in brand-new condition; absolutely pristine.  If the book doesn't "REQUIRE" the accompanying media, is it still OK to send?  I'm worried about getting an RWAP on this if I send the book, and the requesting member hasn't answered my PM about the DVD yet.  If the supplemental media is only an extra bonus feature, does that make the book unpostable if it's missing?

Help, please!!!!  Thanks in advance.

It's not required, ergo you're fine, send it.  Some textbooks do have "required" cds and passkeys to access answers from questions in the book and such.

Well, just my 2 cents.  I'd wait a bit longer and see if the requesting member responds.

If it were me .... I would wait to hear from the other member.

They may very well have ordered the book knowing that there is a DVD included ... and they may have ordered that ISBN of the book particularly to get it.

I don't think you should just send it without the DVD.

Although, perhaps, according to the rules it would be technically OK.

It is my understanding that supplementary MEDIA must accompany the book if it originally came with the book.

eta the Help Center section:

Is my book okay to post here?

ALL books at PBS must meet Book Condition Guidelines.

hardcover books: Yes.

  • Hardbacks do not need to have their dust jackets to be swapped here, and are worth one credit - the same as paperbacks.

audio books: Yes

  • Audio books must be originals.  They do not have to have their original box, but they must be packaged safely in transit and they must be playable.  Audio books are worth 2 credits.
  • Audio books = books that were also published in bound form, that are read aloud by a narrator.  Audio recordings that accompany a bound book as supplementary materials do not qualify as audiobooks.  Performance recordings (ie, comedy routines) do not qualify as audiobooks (performance recordings on CD can usually be Posted at SwapaCD.com)

Ex-library books:  Yes

  • Ex-library books often have stamps inside or on the binding or on the page edges: this is fine.   If you receive an ex-library book that is not clearly marked "withdrawn" (not all libraries do this), you can contact the library to ask them if this book is still part of their collection.

Books that have a signature/note on the flyleaf or title page or inside front or back cover of the book: Yes

BookCrossing books: Yes

  • BookCrossing books may have stamps or stickers/decals and they may have writing inside the covers or flyleaf or page edges.  Members receiving BookCrossing books are not obligated to "journal" them at BookCrossing.com, and PBS members may choose to keep the BookCrossing books they receive.  BookCrossing members who Post these books at PBS must accept this.

Books without ISBNs: Yes *

  • *If they have at least 50 pages.  See information about booklets/pamphlets below
  • You can post books that do not have ISBNs using the Post a Book Without an ISBN feature, accessible via a link at the top of the Post Books page.

Books that originally came with accompanying media Materials: Yes IF the accompanying materials are included

  • A book with accompanying audiocassettes (for example) will earn 1 credit.
  • A book with accompanying cassettes or CDs is not an "audiobook".  An audiobook is a book read aloud by a narrator.
  • If the listing for the book indicates that the book comes with accompanying media materials (CD, VHS, cassette, DVD), all materials must be posted with the book.  If you do not have the accompanying materials, the book cannot be posted alone.
  •  The accompanying media materials (without the book) also cannot be posted alone.

The PBS listing for the book is here: http://www.paperbackswap.com/Life-Far-Jane-Fonda/book/0812975766/

The listing on PBS doesn't mention the DVD in any way.  It's not mentioned in the summary, or in the lengthy description of the book.

I'm confused as to why the two "Help" docs differ in what they say.  The section that I copied and pasted in my original post is what I found when I looked up the Posting Guidelines for books with supplemental materials, and it specifically states that it only applies to supplemental materials that are "required."  That's not the case with this DVD, since it's merely an extra bonus and has no bearing on the book itself.  From what I've found on Amazon, the original hardcover didn't even have the DVD; it was only included with the paperback version.

The front cover of the ISBN you posted indicates that an exclusive DVD is included. If I received the book without the DVD, I would mark it RWAP. You can of course contact the team for an official ruling on whether or not to post it by sending in feedback using the contact us link at the bottom of the page under the company heading.

Yeah, you're probably right.  Dang, I wish I knew what happened to the DVD now.  I'll wait and see what the requestor wants to do, and if she doesn't want it, I'll take it off my shelf and keep it.  I kinda want to re-read it again now, anyway!  LOLOL

Thanks for the help, everyone!

Since the book itself will show up stating right on the cover that it has a DVD with it, there is a high possibility of a RWAP. The fact the hard cover didn't have it really doesn't mean anything. The member may be ordering the paperback specifically because it is supposed to have the DVD with it.

I don't know why the wording in that Help Doc is different, though I do see that in that area, that is the only section on Media supplemental, it doesn't say that media supplemental that isn't "required" for use can be missing either. I can just say that it has always been my understanding that for NON-MEDIA supplemental it matters if it is required or not, but for MEDIA supplemental it always has to be there if it was originally sold with the book.
