I just received a book. Before mailing it, the sender and I had this conversation: her: FYI: one corner is missing from the cover. Otherwise book is in good condition. Do you still want this book?
her: Not much--just the top edge on the binding side. 99 percent of cover is visible--top corner is shaved off.
Now, perhaps I should have been warned by "shaved off" but I assumed from this conversation that a corner of the cover had been cut off, as sometimes happens. In fact, the book is one of the weirdest I've ever seen. It looks to me far more like it was chewed then shaved off, though it's hard to tell for sure. But a triangular section of the top of the book -- including the pages, not just the cover -- is missing. This impacts the binding somewhat and the book will probably start to lose pages, though it hasn't yet. At least half of the top of the book is gone.
I don't think the sender adequately explained what the issue was with the book. What do you think?

Sounds like a RWAP to me... D. |

Based on what you have said so far - I second RWAP. There can be up to 1 inch tear or up to a 1 inch square missing from the cover via the help docs. The sender only mentioned the cover and and said that it was 99% there and if you are saying 1/2 top half of the book is gone - I am assuming you mean 1/2 of the top cover is gone. So based on that I would mark it RWAP. Are the pages gone as well? Is it the fly leaf, title page or text pages? |

No, I mean half of the very top of the book. A small section of the top of the pages is gone, for about half of the book. |

Well, Its probably RWAP, since the book is not intact. I suspect that there might have been something nasty on the top of the book and someone (maybe the sender, maybe someone before the sender) used a (very sharp knife? fine saw? unknown sharp implement?) to attempt to repair the book. I think you should tell the sender that you don't feel that they adequately described the condition of the book to you before you accepted it. AND that they obviously realized in advance that there might be an issue with the book, since they PM'd you in advance about it. And ask for your credit back. |
