From New England to Miami, from Senate to sleazy bordello, the author silkily tells a Mafia story with plenty of action and more than a few surprises. Thurston, an unbalanced FBI agent, places Wade, a cop, in a situation of spying on Mafia boss Gardella. Problems: Wade learns Gardella is a better person than Thurston; Gardella's wife (a double agent) is attracted to Wade; Gardella's sister and her lover and her husband cause complications; etc. The whole story is tensely presented with marvelous sparseness and coolness. A first-rate thriller; highly recommended.
