I love to read this book over and over. We go through 20 years of Kethry's life starting with her first heroic act that starts her down and independent and fulfilling life. She learns the art of war from her grandmother's partner Tarma and joins the mercenary company The Skybolts. During a confrontation, she separates from her escaping group into enemy lands. In trying to find her way out of the enemy country, she saves a Herald of Valdemar and falls in love. But she doesn't have time for this so she ditches him and makes her way back to her company. 10 years later she's the captain of the company and marching to Valdemar to fight for them and she meets up with her Herald again. Will love triumph or is she still too proud?

I really enjoyed this book! I had read a few of Mercedes Lackey's other books. Specifically "Oathbound" and "Oathbreakers" and this continues on in the same story line. It wasn't until finishing this book, however, that I really got into the rest of her books. I didn't realize how many of her other books really blended one into the other while at the same time being stories in and of themselves. Her books stand alone as well as being part of a larger whole. I really liked it, and I like it even more now that I've read some more of the stories that tie into this one. I'm about to pick it up to read again!

I had forgotten how much fun this one is - Kerowyn is a lot of fun, though I do wish that Sayvel/Savil was in it more. Still, an enjoyable re-read... it's another one that is showing the signs of its age. It spanned a lot of time and filled in more gaps. But, my re-reading project is really getting down to it now... only ten books left in the series!
