This edition of The Symposium was very helpful. The beginning has a lengthy introduction that gives you some history of the characters and time period of Greece, and there are numerous footnotes throughout the book that help define specific areas that may be unclear.

I had to read this book for one of my classes and I didn't feel intimated at all!
